Have you ever wondered why one site ranks higher than another or why an authority site will usually always rank higher than other? Well this thing called PageRank is part of the equation to why that is.

Google PageRank (also known as PR) is a score from 0-10 imposed by Google on websites and web pages (that are indexed in their search engine) which is graded largely on link popularity. Link popularity meaning the number of links going to the website or web page in question and the link popularity that those sites have. Because the factor that a link is going to a website or page is not the only factor involved - the link popularity of the linking site it also looked at, Google can use this as a reference to grade the authority of a website or web page.

Google and many other search engines base their search rankings on two main factors. One being those things on the actual web page or website and the other being those things that are off the page or site (example links coming to the site). As part of those “off page factors” PR (PageRank) is looked at heavily. Although it’s importance recently has been played down more than what it was originally, it’s still an important part of ranking well in Google.

Now you should also realize that PR is not the only factor to ranking well. It’s a package deal you need those factors on your website and off to rank well in many of the major search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN). Even though PR is not something that other search engines other Google will look at, it’s still gives you an idea of the number of links and quality of sites that are linking to you which is important to those other search engines.
